Content profile, organic groups and a theming brain melt...

Sometimes I wish I knew more php, but then I'd be a shitty designer ;) that's the disclaimer! As a designer I've had a blast figuring drupal out the last few years, ah, the modules, and I love breaking tpl files...

Anyhow on to the point of this post, I decided to take organic groups out for a ride and see if I can figure out the underpinnings for a social, membership based site. I'm building the site out in the open, why, it puts pressure on me to work on it and avoid the 'cobblers kids have no shoes' syndrome that I face. The site is here: GoaJournal.com. I'm very impressed by how easy using organic groups has been so far, from a designer's perspective and wanted to give it a shout out. It's an amazing mod, and the drupal community agrees with me. I'm thoroughly enjoying using it, and there's much more to dig into with og, og_forums, I'm looking at you for now...

Since this is to be a social site with members, (hah yeah we'll see ;P), I had to start figuring out the user profile pages and how to best manipulate them to make them more robust. I ended up using the content profile and was trying to mimic elements from facebook to see how far I could push it, things like a gallery for users, some way to have a feedback section etc.. So long story short after a bit of digging, lo and behold, I was pointed in the direction of an ebook that I shall also recommend very highly: Ultimate Community Site Guide by Dorien. The book helped me a lot in figuring out user profiles in a very detailed manner and allowed me to expand that section out. Saved a lot of time I would have spent trawling the web for bits and pieces of this information. It gets a little dated with it's panels section as panels has dropped panels2 and is forging ahead with panels3, but that was not as important to me as I can just use css to do what panels does, in a manner of speaking.

And the theming brain melt is all my fault, I've been playing around with the acquia_marina theme since it came out and decided to rip it's guts out to see how it functioned, oy vey, now I'm having fun ;) it's been a great theming exercise though, but I'm still leaning towards Zen and/or Basic as a starter themes for my sites though, but we'll see how this goes.
